Does gamifying social learning activities increase peer-to-peer exchange, or does it lead to gaming behaviors that detract from learning? What kinds of metrics best represent student social participation and community impact, as well as identify system gaming? This talk explores data collected from two undergraduate courses that implemented a gamified, student-facing analytics LTI app called the Engagement Index, which visualized participation on a points leaderboard and in social learning analytics report.
